History of Lhawang Driden Incense

Late Kilkhor Lop Sena — Master of Traditional Incense Craftsmanship in Bhutan

Late Kilkhor Lop Sena was one of Bhutan’s most revered Buddhist monks and master artisans in the ancient art of traditional incense making. Born in the 1920s, he dedicated his life to preserving the sacred craft of incense production, a tradition deeply rooted in Bhutanese spiritual culture since the 17th century (1600s).

During his lifetime, Lop Sena served as a traditional painter and incense artist under the reign of Bhutan’s 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Kings, contributing his artistry to numerous sacred monasteries, royal ceremonies, and religious rituals across the country.

A true legendary figure in Bhutanese incense heritage, Lop Sena was the wisdom holder of age-old incense recipes passed down through generations of monks and artisans. His deep knowledge of Himalayan herbs, ritual substances, and the spiritual significance of incense offerings earned him a place of high respect within the Buddhist community.

Today, his legacy continues through the work of Lhawang Dedhen Incense, preserving his ancient formulas and techniques to craft authentic Bhutanese herbal incense — staying true to his teachings and the sacred traditions of Bhutan.

Dungtsho Lhawang Tshering — Founder of Lhawang Dedhen Incense

Dungtsho Lhawang Tshering, born in 1955, is the visionary founder of Lhawang Dedhen Incense, one of Bhutan’s leading traditional herbal incense manufacturers. Before establishing the company in 1998, he served as a trained Indigenous Herbal Doctor under the Royal Government of Bhutan.

With his deep knowledge of Himalayan medicinal plants and natural healing practices, Dungtsho Lhawang Tshering recognized the sacred connection between herbal medicine and traditional incense-making — both deeply rooted in the careful selection and blending of rare Himalayan herbs. Guided by this wisdom, he founded Lhawang Dedhen Incense with the vision of preserving Bhutan’s ancient incense tradition while applying his specialized herbal knowledge.

Like every traditional incense maker, he developed his own unique blend and secret formula, carefully combining aromatic woods, resins, spices, and medicinal herbs. His signature recipes quickly gained popularity for their rich fragrance, purity, and spiritual benefits — making Lhawang Dedhen Incense one of the most trusted names in Bhutanese incense within a short period.

Today, his legacy continues as the brand upholds the art of handcrafted herbal incense, honoring Bhutan’s spiritual heritage and the founder’s lifelong dedication to Himalayan herbal wisdom.

The Next Generation: Mr. Sonam Tobden

Today, Lhawang Dedhen Incense is proudly managed by Mr. Sonam Tobden, the eldest son of Dungtsho Lhawang Tshering. Holding a degree from Sherubtse College in Kanglung, Tashigang Dzongkhag, Sonam Tobden has been deeply involved in incense making since his school days.

Under the guidance of his father and the late Kilkhor Lop Sena, he learned the traditional skills, herbal knowledge, and spiritual importance of incense preparation. After graduating in 2005, he worked alongside his father for 8 years, gradually gaining hands-on experience in both the craft and business.

In later years, Sonam Tobden formally took over the management of Lhawang Dedhen Incense, continuing the family tradition while preserving the sacred formulas and techniques passed down through generations. He continues to lead the business under the advice and guidance of his father, ensuring that the legacy of purity, devotion, and Bhutanese spiritual craftsmanship endures.
