Introduction to Jaju-Poi

In Buddhist culture, especially in the Himalayan, Tibetan, and Bhutanese traditions, incense is a vital part of daily spiritual practice — for offerings, purification, meditation, and ritual ceremonies. Many traditional Buddhist incenses are already vegetarian, since they’re made from natural herbs, woods, resins, spices, and medicinal plants, without any animal products.

Vegetarian incense refers to incense made without any animal-derived ingredients like musk, honey or alcohol , which were traditionally used in some regions for fragrance. Instead, it’s made solely from:

Zim-Poi (Drizang Kuenchap)

Zim-Poi, traditionally known as “ Palace Incense “ holds a significant place in Himalayan Buddhist spiritual practices. Distinct with its rich reddish color, this incense was once a rare and precious offering, historically reserved for royal palaces and high ceremonial rituals due to the scarcity of its unique and valuable ingredients.

Crafted following age-old traditional methods, this incense mixture embodies the purity and spiritual essence of the Himalayan mountains. Widely used in Buddhist cleansing rituals, smoke offerings (sang), and altar offerings, Sang Drizang Kuenchap carries a natural, soothing aroma believed to purify the environment, clear negative energies, and invoke blessings.

Zangdrup

Zangdrup is a sacred herbal blend used in Buddhist rituals and spiritual practices. Made from six key plants—Aru, Baru, Churu, Zati, Lishi, and Signal—plus other fragrant herbs, it holds deep religious and cultural value. Zangdrup is used in incense, smoke, and sur offerings, as well as in the construction of stupas, statues, and temples to sanctify and bless them. It is also mixed with water or milk for offerings, purification, and consecration ceremonies, symbolizing purity and blessings.

Sur

Sur is a sacred incense mixture traditionally composed of flour, honey, butter, curd, milk, powder of five precious gems, and various aromatic herbs and medicinal plants. This fragrant blend is carefully prepared following ancient spiritual practices and burned at dusk as a compassionate offering to wandering spirits, hungry ghosts (preta), and other unseen beings believed to roam the world, seeking nourishment, comfort, and release from suffering through the generosity of the living.
