📖 Introduction to Rewo Sangchoe Smoke Offering

Rewo Sangchoe is a sacred smoke offering ritual performed in Vajrayana Buddhist traditions, especially in Bhutan, Tibet, and Himalayan regions. The term can be broken down as:

•Rewo (རེ་བོ་) — meaning ‘mountain peak’ or ‘a high place’

•Sang (བསང་) — meaning ‘purification by smoke’

•Choe (མཆོད་) — meaning ‘offering’

Thus, Rewo Sangchoe refers to a smoke offering performed in a high, pure place, offering fragrant herbal incense smoke to the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha), local deities, spirits, and sentient beings of all realms.

📜 Purpose of the Rewo Sangchoe Offering

This practice is performed for multiple sacred purposes:

•To purify obstacles, defilements, and negative forces

•To accumulate merit and wisdom

•To make offerings to Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, deities, and protectors

•To appease local spirits, nagas, and land deities

•To benefit all sentient beings in seen and unseen realms

•To create auspicious circumstances for prosperity, health, and harmony

🌿 Ingredients Traditionally Used

A Rewo Sangchoe incense offering uses a blend of sacred substances including:

•Juniper (Shukpa)

•Rhododendron

•Sandalwood

•Dried fruits

•Sal Resin

•Saffron

•Medicinal herbs

•Flour, grains, and dairy products (symbolic torma offerings)

•fresh silk clothes and fabrics.

🔥 How It’s Performed

•The smoke offering is usually prepared in a clean, open, high place — often on a mountain slope, rooftop, or courtyard.

•A fire or charcoal brazier is used to burn the incense powder or sang offering substances.

•As fragrant smoke rises, prayers and offering verses (sang choe leu) are recited.

•Visualizing the smoke carrying offerings to Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, protector deities, and all beings in the six realms.

•The ritual concludes with dedications for the benefit of all sentient beings.

Rewo Sangchoe

"Rewo Sangchoe ” an incense powder carefully blended from 23 rare and sacred Himalayan herbs. Crafted following age-old traditional methods, this incense mixture embodies the purity and spiritual essence of the Himalayan mountains. Widely used in Buddhist cleansing rituals, smoke offerings (sang), and altar offerings, Sang Drizang Kuenchap carries a natural, soothing aroma believed to purify the environment, clear negative energies, and invoke blessings.

Zangdrup

Zangdrup is a sacred herbal blend used in Buddhist rituals and spiritual practices. Made from six key plants—Aru, Baru, Churu, Zati, Lishi, and Signal—plus other fragrant herbs, it holds deep religious and cultural value. Zangdrup is used in incense, smoke, and sur offerings, as well as in the construction of stupas, statues, and temples to sanctify and bless them. It is also mixed with water or milk for offerings, purification, and consecration ceremonies, symbolizing purity and blessings.

Sur

Sur is a sacred incense mixture traditionally composed of flour, honey, butter, curd, milk, powder of five precious gems, and various aromatic herbs and medicinal plants. This fragrant blend is carefully prepared following ancient spiritual practices and burned at dusk as a compassionate offering to wandering spirits, hungry ghosts (preta), and other unseen beings believed to roam the world, seeking nourishment, comfort, and release from suffering through the generosity of the living.
